Karim Khouader is one of the most singular figures in hip hop dance today, equally present in international battles and on choreographic stages.
Roses works like a film, with its characters, its atmospheres and its narrative tension. Hip hop is the main language here, brought into play through a choreographic writing influenced by genre cinema. We follow a protagonist caught between a dream and the means of reaching it, between what is beautiful in him and what he is capable of to make it through.
The piece lives in that space: between fiction and reality, between beauty and the cost of survival. It brings into view trajectories that society has rarely looked at, without turning them into either victims or heroes. The music, composed by Judicaël Mathurine “CJM’S”, a vocal beatmaker whose practice blends beatbox, gwoka, scat and hip hop, inhabits the dance as much as it carries it.
Karim Khouader grew up in a working-class neighbourhood of the Paris suburbs, lost people close to him, and danced. These realities are inseparable in his work: they give it its substance. Roses is his most personal piece.
