Blossom: a shared stage

Blossom : a shared breath

On 9 October at L’Aire Libre, six artists from the Kilaï company and around fifteen local residents will share the stage. Blossom, by Sandrine Lescourant, sits somewhere between performance, concert and choir, and will be developed from September onwards with participants supported by partner organisations across the area. Co-produced with L’Aire Libre.

The group will not step onto the stage by chance. From September onwards, it will undergo a full creative process: first workshops, where cohesion, listening and a gradual appropriation of the piece’s sequences will be developed, followed by intensive rehearsals alongside the artistic team in the final days. No technical level is required, no prerequisites: walking in slow motion, inhabiting silence, letting oneself be carried by collective frenzy, discovering the power of a shared breath. The connection between people matters more than the memorisation of steps.

Blossom is not a form designed “for” audiences invited to sample culture. The amateur group does not illustrate anything; it is an integral part of the work: the piece exists only because people from the local area take part in it as full performers. Created and recreated more than ten times with groups of varying profiles, the piece reinvents itself in each context.

On stage, six artists—dancers, singers and musicians—will perform alongside the group. Gospel, soul, hip hop dance, afro and house music intersect, shaped by the diverse inspirations and backgrounds of the performers. Sandrine Lescourant, choreographer of the Kilaï company and trained within battle culture, continues here a thread running through her entire work: the stage as a space where different trajectories come together to form a shared force.

The amateur group is formed in collaboration with social organisations in the area: ASFAD, We Ker, Keur Eskem – Maison Internationale de Rennes, and the Conseil de l’Hospitalité of Rennes Métropole. The project is co-produced with L’Aire Libre, which hosts both the rehearsal process and the performance, and is supported by Rennes Métropole.

The evening will continue beyond the performance: a ball followed by a DJ set by Habibitch will open the stage to everyone, fully dissolving the boundary between stage and auditorium.

9 October at 8:30pm, L’Aire Libre, Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande. Duration: 1h15, all audiences from age 5.
