Sandrine Lescourant
Looking Otherwise
Self-taught and forged in battle culture, Sandrine Lescourant develops, through Compagnie Kilaï, a research practice exploring the body as a revealer of social bonds.
Sandrine Lescourant, also known as Mufasa, first established herself on the hip hop battle scene alongside some of the culture’s pioneers. Her artistic journey has been shaped by training in highly codified disciplines—including ballet, contemporary dance, and traditional African dance—while remaining, above all, a self-taught artist at heart.
She has developed a movement language rooted in the values of hip hop—a dance form born from resistance—while collaborating with leading choreographers from the contemporary dance scene. This dual heritage, spanning the street and the stage, structure and spontaneity, runs through her practice without ever seeking to resolve their tensions.
Now the founder and artistic director of Compagnie Kilaï, Sandrine Lescourant grounds her work in a profound exploration of movement, investigating how social relationships are embodied, revealed, or concealed through the body. Drawing on her experience and her perspective on contemporary society, she embraces dance as a powerful response to violence.
Her creations invite audiences to reconsider the way they perceive vulnerability and human sensitivity. Her work constantly reinvents itself, plays with conventions, and draws on what is most intimate within us. Combining intense physical commitment with a singular artistic vision rooted in meaning and sensory experience, her choreography opens pathways towards greater empathy and tolerance.
