W*ack à Rennes
Fostering an Inclusive Local Scen
Rooted in club and queer cultures, W*ack à Rennes nurtures an inclusive local scene in Rennes where knowledge, influences, and experiences are passed on and shared.
W*ack Rennes is a collective dedicated to promoting and developing waacking culture and related dance forms in Rennes. Through training sessions, workshops, and events, it creates spaces for learning, practice, and exchange rooted in club and queer cultures.
Since its creation, the collective has welcomed numerous dancers to share their techniques and artistic practices. The circulation of knowledge, influences, and experiences is central to its mission, fostering the growth of the local community. W*ack Rennes also organizes Battle Practices—accessible and supportive sessions designed as spaces for experimentation, offering an alternative approach to battling based on listening, exchange, and mutual trust.
Driven by collaboration and collective learning, W*ack Rennes has built strong connections with other local dance communities, including Cubanisate and AfroVibe. These partnerships strengthen ties within Rennes’ dance scene while keeping alive the legacy of the OG Punkers. They also help introduce waacking to new audiences through performances at events organized by partner collectives, such as Violence Against Women: NO, presented by the Observatory on Violence Against Women and MC93.
The collective also develops educational and cultural formats such as Waacking Day at Hôtel Pasteur, featuring documentary screenings, introductory classes, DJ workshops, talks on the history of disco, and panel discussions on the evolution of punking and waacking. Through these initiatives, W*ack Rennes promotes dance as a tool for cultural transmission, community education, and the fight against discrimination.
Through all of its activities, W*ack Rennes is helping to build an inclusive, supportive, and engaged local scene where everyone can create, learn, and express themselves freely.
